Grantee Spotlight : Catherine’s Health Center – Young and Impacted

Andrea (not her real name) came to us as a new patient in November, 2014 because "a friend told [her] we could help". At age 28 she had found a lump in her left breast. Her sister was diagnosed with breast cancer in her 30's. Andrea had breast implants in 2012 when she had insurance and had planned to begin surveillance mammograms at age 30 due to her family history. She had recently lost her job, and now found herself without insurance, no way to pay for services, with a lump in her breast and terrified.
Her first appointment with us was 11/12/14. Our doctor was able to palpate a mass in her left breast and recommended bilateral mammogram and L breast ultrasound. We were able to get the first mammogram scheduled using Komen funds and that happened on 11/18/14. Meanwhile our navigator was able to help her apply for the Healthy Michigan Plan and she was approved. An ultrasound guided needle biopsy was performed on 11/20/14 that showed the mass to be a fibro adenoma. She is scheduled for short term follow up.
In just over a week Andrea went from uninsured and terrified, without resources to reassured and fully covered under the ACA with Healthy Michigan Plan. Thank you Avon BHOP for helping us help women like Andrea!

A Grantee's Perspective
