But... I'm Male?
The Mammography Voucher Program is designed for women ages 30-49. Circumstances occasionally present and we will assist women younger than 30 and men of any age who are uninsured and meet the income eligibility criteria for the program. We were contacted by a prior client of ours who we had served for 4 years until she aged into the Florida Breast and Cervical Program. When she called us, she was emotionally distraught; she had just lost her 24 year old son in a car accident and was now very concerned for her 21 year old son. He had just told her about a mass he found on his left breast. The mass was growing and they were concerned. After not being able to find any place to help him, she recalled how MVP had provided her breast health services for several years and reached out to us for referral assistance. She was very afraid that her son might have breast cancer since breast cancer was in her family history and fearful she was going to lose him also. She was relieved when we reassured her that MVP would help him. Working with one of our community partners he saw a male physician and obtained the prescription for a diagnostic mammogram with ultrasound. Thankfully the mass was not cancer related and both the mom and son were very thankful. This story is just one more example of how the Mammography Voucher Program is a safety net for residents of Pinellas County as MVP is the only program for men who are uninsured and low-income with breast health concerns.
